Homeward bound the incredible journey

The Journey theme is memorable and handily evokes both the family and adventure aspects of the movie. Overall this is a neat little presentation. If you find the complete score online, the track to check out is “Sassy in River,” a perilous action cue that also includes a noble rendition of the Journey theme for Shadow’s speech. Broughton cycles through the Chance, Journey, and Family themes. “End Credits” kicks off with triumphal tuba and a brief iteration of the Journey theme. At 2:28, however, the Journey theme brings hope, then repeats with celebratory power. The middle portion of the track gets somber when they realize that one of the pets didn’t come back. A partial rendition of the Family theme amidst glittering percussion leads into a more triumphant version of the Family theme. “Reunited” accompanies the scene that brought tears to many an eye. Comedic action dominates “Escape from the Pound.” It’s alright in the movie, but not particularly engaging to listen to. “The Little Lost Girl” is focuses on sweetness with appearances of the Family theme. The pace gets slower and harrowing, but resolves in a snippet of the Journey theme among comical bits. After suspenseful noodling, we get some actual thrilling chase music. However there is real danger, as exemplified in “The Cougar.” Rattling percussion and harrowing strings introduce the natural predator. “Breakfasting with Bears” and “Fording the Stream” are playful pieces based on Chance and Sassy’s themes respectively. It then gets into other variations of the Journey theme. “Just Over the Next Hill” starts with a loud but solitary trumpet as the immensity of the journey dawns on the animals. “The Journey Begins” introduces the other theme. “My Name is Chance” spends its first half on the Family theme and the second on Chance’s playful guitar rhythm. Unless I simply missed it, it might be that the Journey theme already effectively conveys his wisdom (at least in comparison to the other pets). I wasn’t able to identify a motif for Shadow. Sassy has warm, catty strings against glittering percussion. It’s a prominent motif since Chance’s inexperience leads to a lot of the comical mishaps. There is also a playful guitar theme for Chance, introduced in the first track. It blasts forth during wide shots of the three animals running through the wilderness, but also has less enthusiastic but still noble appearances such as when Shadow lectures Chance on the meaning of a pet’s life. Much more thrilling is the Journey theme (1:22 in “The Journey Begins”), an adventurous melody imbued with noble purpose. The first, introduced at the outset of “My Name is Chance,” is the Family theme which represents the emotional bonds of the animals and humans. Of course, one could select their favorite tracks and create a preferable listening experience. I did find Intrada’s complete and out-of-print score on Youtube, but this of course also includes a host of brief comedy cues and the previously unreleased material sounds like a comparatively good DVD rip. The album is unfortunately only half an hour long, with the obvious missing highlight being the suspenseful piece from the river crossing scene.

After all, the movie is about three pets trekking across the American west. His musical choices blend the styles, with heartwarming themes and western staples such as rustic guitar twanging. You really believe that they’re getting chased by wild animals and having conversations (they’re voiced by actors).īruce Broughton, a composer known for both family films and westerns, composes the score. What’s also incredible is the animals’ performance (doubtlessly mixed with clever editing). It’s a pretty good movie that really gets you in the feels.

Along the way they encounter wildlife, a roaring river, and other obstacles. Mistakenly believing they’ve been abandoned, the three escape and go on the titular incredible journey to make it back home. When the humans have to temporarily live in San Francisco, they leave the pets with a friend. Younger brother Jamie has an American bulldog named Chance, a rambunctious former stray who’s not interested in becoming part of the family. Daughter Hope has a pampered and snarky cat appropriately named Sassy. Older son Peter has the old and wise golden retriever Shadow. The Burnford-Seaver family owns three pets, one for each child. Homeward Bound is a childhood favorite of mine.
